Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

Children's Ministry

  • When do I take my child to class and when do I pick him/her up?
Children’s classrooms are opened 15 minutes before each service. In the event that a teacher or assistant is not immediately available, please do not leave your children in an empty classroom. Children left unsupervised is never a safe practice in the world we live in today - even in a church. In light of this, we require that all children be signed in and out on the class roster. Children must be picked up within 15 minutes after the service. If you are in need of prayer or counseling after the service, please notify (via a deacon if necessary) your child’s teacher that you may be delayed.
  • How does your paging system work?
We use the paging system for parents with children in any of the Children’s Ministry classes. When you drop off your child, a teacher will give you a numbered bracelet and assign the same number to your child on the class sign-in sheet.

If your child needs you during the service, the number on your bracelet will display on paging monitors located at the front of the auditorium. We page parents for the following reasons:

    1. persistent crying

    2. sickness

    3. behavior problems

If your number is displayed, please exit the auditorium as quietly as possible and report to your child’s classroom.
  • What are your guidelines for colds and other minor illnesses?
What are your guidelines for colds and other minor illnesses?
We want to protect our children and volunteers from illnesses, therefore we ask that you refrain from bringing your children to church if they have had the following symptoms:

    1. unusual fatigue or irritability

    2. coughing, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes

    3. fever

    4. vomiting or diarrhea

    5. inflamed mouth or throat

    6. unusual rash

If your child develops any of these symptoms during the service you will be called immediately and asked to remove your child from the class. We will not administer any medication (except prayer J ).
  • What should I do if my child cries when I drop him/her off?
There is an adjustment period for every child when he/she is placed in new surroundings. To lessen the effects of this adjustment period we suggest the following:

    1. Pray for and with your child.

    2. When planning to attend service, please make sure your child is fed and well rested.

Our experience is that the longer the parent delays in leaving the child, the longer the child will cry and be unhappy. If for some reason the child does not adjust and continues to cry, we will page the parent to come to the classroom.
  • Can my baby or young child sit with me in the church service?
We believe that is vital that God’s Word be shared with people of all ages, thus we have church services that are geared towards the different developmental levels of our church population.

Our services in the auditorium are designed for adults and it is important that there be minimal distractions that might hinder the focusing on Jesus Christ through worship and teachings. Children under the age of 10 (ten) are not permitted in the adult services except on special occasions when accompanied by an adult.

While the adults are worshiping in the auditorium, children have the opportunity to worship Jesus and study the Bible too in their own classes. We’ve found that we are able to do a much better job of ministering to your kids and helping them to grow spiritually in these environments where they are able to be more active and social, and they are learning through multi-sensory lessons.

Please note: If you feel uncomfortable about leaving your children in their classes or if you have a special need and are unable to sit through the entire service, we request that you view the service from the overflow room where you can sit with your children. This room is located inside the auditorium immediately to the left and is equipped with viewing windows and speakers
  • What if my child is potty training?
If your child is in underwear and is potty training, we ask that you inform the teacher of your child’s progress, take him/her to the restroom just before class and bring an extra change of clothes.

In the toddler room, if there is an accident, the teacher will change your child with the clothes you have provided.

In the 2 & 3 year old classroom, if there is an accident, the parent will be paged to change the child.
  • When do you promote a child up to the next age group?
Elementary age children are promoted to the next grade level at the beginning of the summer. We do this in order to move children up with their familiar classmates and when they have a change in their class level at school.

Children in the infant and toddler rooms, and the preschool classrooms are promoted based on their physical development or age.

Infants are promoted when they have mastered walking.

Toddlers are promoted when they are around 2 1/2 years of age and are potty trained. This promotion is
           discretionary.

4 year olds are promoted on their birthdays.

6 year olds are promoted when they are going into 1st grade.
  • Is there a private area for mother’s to nurse their babies?
We provide a private partitioned section of the overflow room for nursing mothers. The overflow room is located just inside the auditorium doors on the left. The far left section of the room is available to mothers to nurse their babies.

This Nursing Mothers’ Area and the women’s handicap restroom are equipped with diaper changing areas for your convenience.

We ask that all mothers who need to nurse their babies or change diapers please use the overflow room and not the infant room. Space is very limited and we want to give our volunteers and the babies plenty of room to play and explore.

  • What Children's Ministry volunteer positions are available and how can I get involved?
We are blessed with a growing number of children attending our church on Sundays and Wednesdays, and we rely solely on the involvement of volunteers to minister to these children. Since Calvary Chapel’s children do not attend church with their families, their time in the Children’s Ministry is some of the most meaningful spiritual time of their week. It is a time when they are fed and nourished through God’s Word. Therefore, we only desire volunteers who see serving the children as an honor and a high calling, and who will faithfully give of their time.

Some areas of service directly related to the children include: teaching or assisting in a class (infant-5th grade), children’s worship, puppets and greeters. Any person working directly with the children must complete a Children’s Ministry application and undergo a national background check. We are not looking for professionals, rather we desire dedicated, teachable individuals who have their own personal relationships with Christ and are open and available to the Lord’s leading. These volunteers are called to exemplify our mission statement of knowing, loving and serving Jesus.

We also have many opportunities for volunteers to work behind the scenes in the Children’s Ministry, more as support for those volunteers working directly with the children, for example; resource and technology assistants.

Children’s Ministry applications are available at the information counter and in the Children’s Ministry office. Completed applications can be dropped off in an Agape Box located in the auditorium or handed to a Children’s Ministry staff person. For more information on serving in this vital ministry, please contact Paula Wibberley at 514-1929.

  • What should I do about my children who are in class when and an emergency arises and everyone must exit the buildings?
Should an emergency arise that requires evacuating the building, please follow the directions of the person in charge of your area.

All children’s classrooms and the youth center have diagrams posted of planned evacuation routes for particular classrooms. All Children’s Ministry volunteers have been instructed to use the proper evacuation routes for their specific classroom and to take role and do a headcount of children in their class.

Parents do not go to your children’s classrooms. This could cause bottle-necked hallways and confusion.

You can be reunited with your children once everyone has exited the building and Children’s Ministry volunteers have verified they have all of their children out of the building.

  • What do I need to do if my child has food allergies or special health concerns?
When signing your child into the classroom, there is a space provided for special instructions regarding your child. If you feel the information is too private to write on the sign-in sheet or should be discussed with a teacher face-to-face, please request to speak to the teacher away from the children.

Please note: An Area Supervisor or Service Coordinator can attend to the class so you can have the full attention of the teacher.

If you decide to regularly attend Calvary Chapel, please contact a staff person in the Children’s Ministry office regarding the allergy or health concern. We will want to make sure your concern is properly addressed in the years to come.

General

  • Does Calvary Chapel have a denomination?
Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believer's in the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  Our supreme desire is to know Christ and to be conformed into His image by the power of the Holy Spirit.  We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such, only their overemphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the Body of Christ.  We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is His (Agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves to be Christians
