Need comfort? It’s in these words!

3/14/2011 by Kelly Burke

“Therefore comfort one another with these words” I Thessalonians 4:18

I am so thankful that God in His infinite wisdom and love put in His eternal word that I can find comfort. Comfort is something we all want and something we zealously seek when we are troubled. In reality we probably place too much emphasis on our comfort and our convenience. Nevertheless, when we are hurting we need comfort and the God of all comfort makes it available.

Specifically in this letter to the church in Thessalonica, the comfort being offered was to those that were concerned about their loved ones that had already died. The people wanted to know about them and be assured that they were okay. Paul offered the ultimate comfort in that yes, as believers they were asleep in Jesus and that one day (maybe today) Jesus Himself would come and gather them to be with Him forever. Now that is comfort! At least it is for those that died in Christ.

And that is our first question, what about you? Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus in that you know and have accepted that He died for your sins? If so, you are eternally secure in Him and that is a comfort and hope that is real and that can not be taken away. Please make sure of that today. It means everything!

But beyond that and for those of us that know we belong to Him, where do you go to find comfort? How about courage, strength, wisdom, love, forgiveness, peace (the list goes on and on)? Our God is an all sufficient God and He has provided all that He knows we need. But where do we find it, how do we tap in?

Look back at our verse – Therefore comfort one another with these words. That’s it. It’s in His Word and again that is why He placed it there. Do you read it, do you study it, and do you meditate on it and allow it to feed your body, soul and mind? The Lord has given us an incredible treasure in His Word but for it to have effect, we must take it in.

My prayer today is that we all would read the Bible more and rely more on what we find there. God’s Word is full of love, wisdom, strength, peace, forgiveness and comfort. Please read it. Know how He feels about you. Know the plans He has for you. Know how to walk the walk in this life and in the life to come. May the Lord richly bless the reading of His Word and may we be comforted that He is our God and He loves us so.
